The epistemic foundations of injustice: lessons from the Young Marx

Abstract This article intends to show what extent the early Marxian categories of alienation, ideology and proletariat can serve better understand current forms epistemic injustice, as well as, conversely, how latter illuminate some unclear aspects such concepts. In first part, it will be explained which Marx’s concept alienation accounts for experience an individual in a world whose norms she is subject, but cannot recognise her own. It shown that Marx finds answer form emancipatory praxis linked transformative appropriation social reality. order deepen understanding this idea emancipation, second part analyse proletariat. argued taking up considerations about Hegelian figure rabble, distinguishes “liberal” from “human” emancipation. third contemporary example used usefulness young analyses concerning dimension emancipation struggles. fourth these ideas developed further through has gained great importance recent studies Critical Theory carries out different socio-epistemic blocks ideological nature prevent articulating, communicating overcoming negative experiences hinder self-realisation. sense, theoretically address and, relation this, constitutive function excluded creation new sectors reality their demands met.
